$28.55Celebrating the Good Times! Understanding the Anti-Biased Approach to Celebrations in Early Learning Environments
Celebrations! Holidays! Traditions! Celebrations in the early learning years are full of excitement, joy, and play. However, they can also be overwhelming, exclusive, and difficult for children if we don’t consider the meaning and relevance of these holidays for children and their families. Big feelings come with celebrations which is why it can be difficult for many educators to see celebrations through an anti-biased perspective and figure out how to implement holidays using an anti-biased approach. Common questions that arise are: Do we include all holidays or none? Which holidays do we include and how do we do this? Is this going to add to our workload? As early childhood professionals, we can use this as an opportunity to learn and reflect on our current practices to figure out what works for each of us and how to move forward with celebrations and holidays. To ask ourselves: What is important for the families? How can we be inclusive in our practices? What should we do and what is not appropriate? Let’s learn about how we can include the joy of many types of celebrations to help children and families feel a sense of belonging in our spaces. Join us as we discuss and reflect on the anti-biased approach and share ideas of how to change our approaches to be more inclusive and respectful while still feeling the joy of celebrating with children.
